Microsoft is now doing this for Android, as the company is giving up on versions 7.1 and below. And at the same time, the userbase of older operating systems is also declining, so it makes little sense to continue investment in support for them in the long term. Software companies end up dropping support for older versions of the operating system their software runs on pretty much because they need to move to newer technology only supported in the latest releases. The announcement doesn’t come as a big surprise though.
